Hancher Auditorium at University of Iowa

The JACK Quartet—with a long history of teaching, coaching, and performing at the University of Iowa—opens Fifty for the Future with a wide-ranging set of selections from the project.

inti figgis-vizueta offers fleeting moments of order arising from ambient noise. Mark Applebaum channels Dadaist wit, while Onutė Narbutaitė invites patient contemplation. Barry Guy draws on Samuel Beckett's final poem, Missy Mazzoli builds from harmonics to an ecstatic chorale, and Stephan Thelen creates a musical world of layered meters.

Program:
inti figgis-vizueta: branching patterns
Mark Applebaum: Flashlight
Onutė Narbutaitė: just strings and a light wind above them
Barry Guy: what is the word
Missy Mazzoli: Enthusiasm Strategies
Stephan Thelen: Circular Lines

Tickets go on sale to the general public on July 20, 2026 at 10:00am CT.

JACK Quartet returns Friday evening for a second Fifty for the Future program—pulling the catalog's wider range into focus.

Nicole Lizée conjures film noir, while Yotam Haber builds on a Jewish melody from Italy's Piedmont. Aleksander Kościów meditates on the ancient Greek cry for mercy. Sky Macklay imagines notes as prehistoric bones. Tanya Tagaq brings Arctic sounds into the string quartet, and Rafiq Bhatia reimagines the quartet through his own guitar technique. A skittish, incantatory work by Laurie Anderson closes the evening.

Program:
Nicole Lizée: Darkness Is Not Well Lit
Yotam Haber: From the Book
Aleksander Kościów: Hílathi
Sky Macklay: Vertebrae
Tanya Tagaq: Sivunittinni
Rafiq Bhatia: Glimmers; 3 movements
Laurie Anderson: Shutter Island
