JACK Studio applications are open! Applications will be accepted until June 1, 2024 at 11:59pm ET.

Please note that JACK will only be accepting applications for readings during the 2024 application cycle. Residency applications will reopen in 2025.

Violist John Richards performs JACK Studio artist Michele Cheng’s piece “Jaack” (2023), a world premiere that featured the four quartet members, four hand-made puppets, video score, interactive visual arts, AI generated images, a custom smart mirror, and structured improvisation performed by JACK.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You must submit a PDF of your string quartet score in order to be eligible for a reading. This score can be notated however you’d like. If you do not have a completed string quartet, we encourage you to apply for Studio’s two-year artist residency when that application opens in 2025.

  • For reading: work sample must be a completed string quartet.

    For residency application: work samples that show your musical interests, and particularly your use of string instruments, are recommended.

    Work samples can be links to PDFs, streaming audio recordings, or video (Google, SoundCloud, DropBox, etc). A reminder: Please edit the share settings on any files so that we can open them!

  • Note: JACK is only accepting applications for readings during the 2024 application cycle. Residency applications will reopen in 2025.

    You can apply for both a reading and a residency if you wish. Applicants will only be accepted for one program, not both.

  • JACK has worked with many composers who have devised their own styles of notation, and we’re excited to experiment with graphic scores, improvisation, and text-based directions.

  • No! There are no educational requirements for this application.

  • Due to the high number of applications each year, we do not accept letters of recommendation or references. If your private teacher/colleague is a part of what led you to apply for JACK Studio, please feel free to mention them by name in your answer to, “Why are you interested in writing for string quartet?“

  • All applications are due on June 1, 2024 by 11:59PM E.S.T. We will not accept revised applications (updated work samples or recordings, etc) after that date.

  • Applicants will hear from JACK Studio about their application via email by early August 2024 The new cohort of JACK Studio artists will be announced in September 2024.
